Self Care: Time to put ourselves first!

Not sure what to do during our 4 week lockdown? Here’s a few idea’s to keep us all busy and work on our Self Care!

As you are all aware, we are facing a difficult time at the moment throughout the world. Covid-19 has taken over our daily lives, leaving us at home with 12 hours to fill. I feel like must of us are bored and have no idea what to do so end up watching Netflix for majority of the day.

Here’s where I can help! I have put together a wee guide of tips and things to do during this time, that will help lift your well-being and self care. Some of these might be a bit tricky if your a full time mum but I have listed a few that you could definitely add to your day.

1) Having a bath with your favourite bath bomb:

As we are approaching Autumn, the days are starting to get cooler especially in the morning and evening. Everyday I either have a hot shower or bath, to refresh myself and take in all those benefits of having one. Here is why you should included this into your day:

  • Relieves muscle tension
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Have cleaner and healthier skin
  • Improves blood circulation
  • Relieves cold/flu symptoms

Adding your favourite bath bomb makes it’s a little more special and not mention how good you’ll smell afterwards! I am obsessed with Lush bath bomb’s which are literally a life changer. So many different options and aren’t they pretty!

2) Painting your nails:

Painting your nails is one way to boost your mood and give yourself a bit of self care. We are currently looking at our hands 24/7, washing them etc so there’s no better way to wash them when they are on fleek! As you can tell, pink is on top of the list for me and look at how bright and colourful they look!

Not sure what brand to go for? Here are some epic and long lasting nail polish brands I swear by:

All of these are available at Farmers and selected pharmacy’s.

3) Putting on a face mask:

SKIN SKIN SKIN! Keeping your skin in check with a regular routine is so important. It is a good way to relax for 20 minutes, taking time for yourself and afterwards your skin looks fresh and clean. I always aim to at least do one face mask a week, followed by my everyday skin products.

The face mask I am using currently is the Brightening Clay Mask from by nature Skin Care  (retails for NZD$12.99) It is really personal preference on what type you use, a sheet mask is a good one to use too.

4) Exercise – Walking, Yoga or Running

Adding some sort of exercise into your day can seriously change your whole day. I start my day with either a walk or run, it prepares me for my day ahead, gets the blood flowing. Some people choose to end their day with exercise which is totally fine, it’s actually a really good way to wind down after a long day.

Even if you add at least 20min of exercise, you will see the change and feel so good. Yoga or meditation is another good way to get the body moving and then to relax. Please remember to always stretch after any exercise you complete. Otherwise you could risk getting an injury.

5) Reading a book or completing a colouring in book:

Everyday without fail, I have either been reading my book and colouring in a new drawing. How therapeutic is it to read a book! Your mind is so focused and relaxed. Funnily enough, a book forces you to relax, takes you away from things or situations that is stressing your brain.

If your not a book lover, a colouring in book could be the way to go for you. Buy yourself or use if you have some bright coloured pens/pencils. Find a picture out of the book or if you don’t have one, easily find one on pinterest. Start colouring and watch your creative side unfold!

6) Listening to a Podcast

Now, this is something I have started doing very recently. I have never had the time to actually sit down and listen to a podcast (well, that’s what I thought you were meant to do) but playing a podcast while your eating brekkie or in the car on the way to work, is how I add it into my day. If you have Spotify, there are many different genres of podcasts that you can listen to that currently relate to you in the present.

I am currently listening to a podcast series by Rob Dial who speaks about mindset and mindfulness. Each podcast is different, his current ones relate to what is going on in the world right now (he is in the USA) which is surprisingly really helpful.

7) Getting into a good sleep routine:

They alway’s say it is so important to have a good and regular sleep routine. It is true. Sleeping is important for so many reasons and I can understand how difficult it may be for people right now to sleep. If your someone like me who’s work roster changes every week, one week you start at 7am and other your at work by 9.30am, this when your sleep routine comes in to play. Waking up at the same time each day (it’s ok for it to be out by a COUPLE of minutes) and getting the same amount of sleep hours each night, will truely help your body and mind function so much better and effectively.

It is recommended to get about 7-8hrs sleep a night. I found in the past if I slept for more than 8 hours, I was actually over tired and my body was just lagging all day. Since changing my sleep and having a routine, each morning is so much easier to wake up and I last a lot longer during the day. Having a hot tea or reading a book before bed, can help with a better sleep.

8) Enjoying your favourite beverage at the end of the night:

Of course this is on the list! How good is it to enjoy a glass of wine at the end of your day. As you can see, mine is a lovely cocktail which I do not have very night but on the odd occasion of course.

Treat yourself to a glass, especially with everything that is going on at the moment!

I hope you all are staying safe, looking after each other who is in your bubble and being kind to others. We will get through this all together, unite as one. Stay strong my lovely’s.

So, what are you going to do?
