I honestly don’t know where I’d be without my best friend and fur brother, Zac the German Shepherd.
My family have always owned big dogs – some of my most cherished childhood memories feature our beloved canines.
When I was about three years old my parents brought home our first family dog, a German Shepherd called Jake.
Jake quickly grew to become one of my closest friends, and was there through eeeeevvvvverything.
He was there through all the laughs and all the tears, he was there when I started and finished Primary School, he was my shoulder to cry on when mum and dad were being “mean” (aka wouldn’t let me eat Tim Tams for dinner) and he was ALWAYS up for a cuddle when I was feeling down.
As the years passed by, so did our dogs – since Jake we’ve had a Labrador, Golden Retriever and more recently another German Shepherd who I am absolutely BESOTTED with.
Meet Zac – he’s about two years old and is the absolute apple of my eye.
As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realise what an important role these dogs have played in my life.
Little did I know at the time, but these clever canines taught me so many life lessons, and were there for me when no human could be.
I’ve compiled a list of 8 reasons why every girl should own a dog – check them out below!
1.They will take as many selfies as you want – exhibit A (see above), dogs don’t care about how many snaps it takes until you get the perfect one, all they care about is being in your company.
2.They love you unconditionally – Zac will ALWAYS be happy to see me, he doesn’t care if I’ve had a bad hair day or if I’m not my usual bubbly myself. I can always count on him to be happy to see me at the end of a long day.
3. They make you laugh – Zac makes me laugh EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Whether it be from licking me on the face when I come home from work, or trying to bite the water that comes out of the hose – he can always put a smile on my face.
4. They decide what boys are good and what ones are bad – dogs have a certain ‘knowing’ about particular people. They can tell a bad egg from a good one, so are therefore a good judge of character when it comes to new dating prospects.
5. They make you feel safe – that’s the benefit of having a bigger dog, German Shepherd’s in particular have a real knack for looking after young children, he follows my young nieces all around the house, he even waits outside the toilet until they come out!
6. They listen – having a dog is like having your own personal therapist, they have all the time in the world to just sit there and listen to your problems. They won’t judge you for having a good old bitch, they’re happy to listen and be there for you.
7. They keep you fit – looking for the motivation to exercise? Get a dog and then you’ll HAVE to go walking each day. Big dogs like Zac need to stretch their legs at least once (if not twice) a day.
8. They prepare you for kids – I guess in a way, having a dog is the closest thing to prepare you for having a kid. You’re solely responsibly to care for them 24/7, feed them, socialise them when they’re young and to make sure they get the best life they possibly can.
I hope you guys enjoyed this post! I haven’t written anything personal on here for what feels like forever.
What do you love most about having a dog?
