Be Spontaneous: Why Having No Plan Is The Best Plan

If I could change one thing about myself, it would be to stop planning ahead and just live in the moment.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I’ve always been five steps ahead of myself.

I have always been one for making plans, always knowing what’s next and having all my ducks lined up neatly in a row.

When I was at school I stressed about what I was going to study at university, when I was at university I was stressed about the career I wanted to have when I graduated – and now I find myself stressing about getting married, having kids and settling down! Will it ever end?

Sometimes I get so far ahead of myself that I just need to take a breathe and remember that there are only three things that are inevitable in this life: life, death and change.

Change is a big one for me, especially since I suffer from anxiety when I’m unsure of what’s going to happen in almost any given situation (btw I love the posts on anxiety that my friend Alisha from Passion Is Beauty writes, they’re so helpful).

As I’ve grown older I have come to learn that life is not always going to give you that happy ending you’ve been planning for, so it’s better to go in with an open mind and be ready for the change so that when it comes you can avoid the anxiety and disappointment.

It’s totally normal to not know what where you will be or how you will feeling in a year’s time, let alone in the next three days – so embrace it and start living in the now!

You might end up ‘failing’ your plan to be promoted at work by the end of the year and could instead be happily working on a yacht somewhere in the Greek islands with the man of your dreams – you just don’t know.

You’ll be surprised at how refreshing it feels to escape the routine of ‘planning’ everything, and you will end up learning so much more about yourself – trust me.

Life is always going to throw the unexpected at you, the plan is always going to change.

The more plans you make, the greater risk you take to fail. If you’re going to plan for anything, plan to have no plan at all.

  • “Change is the only constant.” :) Great post, Steph!

  • I love this post! I completely agree. I am a bit of a worrier but there’s been a few struggles this year so I’ve learnt not to worry too much about the future and take each day as it comes.
